Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Cookies:

  • 2 3/4 cups (345g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional, but adds great flavor)
  • 2 tbsp (30ml) milk

For the Frosting:

  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups (240g) powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp (30ml) heavy cream (or milk)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pink or red food coloring (optional)
  • Valentine’s Day sprinkles (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cream Butter & Sugar: In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 2 minutes).
  4. Add Wet Ingredients: Mix in egg, vanilla, almond extract, and milk until combined.
  5. Combine & Chill: Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing until dough forms. Chill dough for 30 minutes.
  6. Roll & Cut: Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to about ¼-inch thickness. Cut into heart shapes.
  7. Bake: Place cookies on prepared baking sheets and bake for 8–10 minutes or until edges are lightly golden. Let cool completely.
  8. Make Frosting: Beat butter until smooth, then gradually mix in powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla. Add food coloring if desired.
  9. Frost & Decorate: Spread frosting over cooled cookies and top with festive sprinkles.

Notes

  • Chilling the dough prevents spreading and keeps cookies soft.
  • For a glaze-style frosting, use milk instead of butter.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days or refrigerate for longer freshness.
