Description

This Texas Toast Sloppy Joes recipe combines the classic hearty sloppy joe mixture with cheesy, crispy Texas toast for a delicious and comforting meal. Ground beef is simmered in a flavorful tomato-based sauce, then spooned onto cheesy baked Texas toast slices and topped with melted mozzarella, making it a perfect easy dinner or game day snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Sloppy Joe Mixture

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½ cup yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Texas Toast and Cheese

  • 13.5 ounces Five Cheese Texas Toast, 8 slices
  • 8 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded (preferably freshly shredded)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a large rimmed baking tray with parchment paper. This will be used to bake the Texas toast later.
  2. Cook Ground Beef: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef for 4 to 5 minutes until no pink remains. Stir occasionally to break the meat into crumbles.
  3. Drain Fat: Remove the browned ground beef with a slotted spoon onto a plate and drain excess fat from the skillet to reduce grease.
  4. Sauté Onions: Add butter and finely chopped onions to the skillet. Sauté on medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes until the onions are soft, translucent and fragrant.
  5. Add Sauce Ingredients: Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, white vinegar, yellow mustard, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and the cooked ground beef back into the skillet with the onions. Mix thoroughly to combine.
  6. Simmer Mixture: Bring the sauce mixture to a boil then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 7 to 8 minutes until the sloppy Joe mixture thickens nicely. This intensifies flavors and melds ingredients together.
  7. Prepare Texas Toast: Place the 8 slices of frozen Five Cheese Texas Toast on the prepared baking tray with the shredded cheese side facing up. Bake in the oven for 6 minutes to toast the bread and slightly melt the cheese.
  8. Top Toast: Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Spoon a little less than ½ cup of the sloppy Joe mixture evenly onto each slice of toast.
  9. Add Mozzarella: Generously mound ¼ cup of shredded mozzarella cheese on top of the sloppy Joe mixture on each slice, focusing the cheese in the center to allow it to melt and spread evenly without dripping off the sides.
  10. Melt Cheese & Finish Baking: Return the baking sheet with the topped Texas toast to the oven and bake for an additional 3 to 4 minutes. This finishes baking the toast and melts the mozzarella to bubbly perfection.

Notes

  • We recommend shredding your mozzarella cheese fresh from the block rather than using pre-shredded cheese, which often contains preservatives that inhibit proper melting.
  • For a leaner meal, use lean ground beef or substitute ground turkey or chicken.
  • Adjust the spiciness by adding chili powder or hot sauce to the sloppy Joe mixture if desired.
  • Serve immediately for best texture, as the toast will soften if left too long.
