Description

This homemade version of Sloppy Joes is sweet, tangy, and savory with a ground beef filling on a soft bun. Quick, easy, and packed with flavor, it’s perfect for weeknight meals or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (lean, 80/20 or 85/15)
  • 1/2 cup diced onion
  • 1 minced garlic clove
  • 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Soft hamburger buns or brioche buns (to serve)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook 1 pound ground beef until browned (about 5-7 minutes). Drain excess grease and add ½ cup diced onion and 1 minced garlic clove. Sauté for 2 minutes.

  2. Stir in:

    • 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce

    • ½ cup ketchup

    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

    • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

    • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard

    • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

    • ½ teaspoon salt

    • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

  3. Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.

  4. Spoon the beef mixture onto toasted hamburger buns and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Toast the buns to prevent sogginess and add texture.
  • Simmer for flavor to thicken and deepen the taste.
  • Make it ahead for even more developed flavors.
