Description

This Overnight Crème Brûlée French Toast is a luxurious breakfast or brunch dish with a caramelized sugar topping, soft custard-like center, and buttery bread soaked in a rich vanilla custard overnight. Perfect for special occasions or holiday mornings, it’s an effortless yet elegant way to impress your guests!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 loaf of challah or brioche bread, sliced thick
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup light corn syrup
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Optional toppings: powdered sugar, fresh berries, or whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Caramel Base:
    1. In a small saucepan, combine the melted butter, brown sugar, and corn syrup. Heat over low until smooth and combined.
    2. Pour the caramel mixture into the bottom of a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Layer the Bread:
    1. Arrange the bread slices in a single layer over the caramel base. Slightly overlap the slices if necessary.
  3. Make the Custard:
    1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.
    2. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread slices, ensuring each piece is well soaked.
  4. Refrigerate Overnight:
    1. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.
  5. Bake:
    1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the dish from the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for 20 minutes.
    2. Bake uncovered for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  6. Serve:
    1. Let the French toast cool for 5 minutes before serving. Carefully invert slices to reveal the caramelized bottom. Garnish with optional toppings as desired.

Notes

  • Substitute challah or brioche with French bread if preferred.
  • For a slightly crispier texture, broil the dish for 1-2 minutes after baking.
  • This dish can be prepared up to 24 hours in advance.
