- 1 loaf of challah or brioche bread, sliced thick
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/4 cup light corn syrup
- 6 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Optional toppings: powdered sugar, fresh berries, or whipped cream
Instructions
- Prepare the Caramel Base:
- In a small saucepan, combine the melted butter, brown sugar, and corn syrup. Heat over low until smooth and combined.
- Pour the caramel mixture into the bottom of a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Layer the Bread:
- Arrange the bread slices in a single layer over the caramel base. Slightly overlap the slices if necessary.
- Make the Custard:
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.
- Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread slices, ensuring each piece is well soaked.
- Refrigerate Overnight:
- Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.
- Bake:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the dish from the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for 20 minutes.
- Bake uncovered for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
- Serve:
- Let the French toast cool for 5 minutes before serving. Carefully invert slices to reveal the caramelized bottom. Garnish with optional toppings as desired.
Notes
- Substitute challah or brioche with French bread if preferred.
- For a slightly crispier texture, broil the dish for 1-2 minutes after baking.
- This dish can be prepared up to 24 hours in advance.
