Description

Indulge in the rich and decadent flavors of this Homemade German Chocolate Cake. Moist chocolate cake layers are filled and topped with a luscious coconut-pecan frosting, then finished with a velvety chocolate frosting.

Cake:

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil or canola oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

Coconut-Pecan Frosting:

  • 3/4 cup evaporated milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup shredded sweetened coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Chocolate Frosting:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup evaporated milk
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake: Mix dry ingredients, add wet ingredients, pour in boiling water, and bake in pans.
  2. Make the Coconut-Pecan Frosting: Cook ingredients except coconut and pecans, then stir in coconut and pecans.
  3. Prepare the Chocolate Frosting: Melt butter, stir in cocoa, add milk and powdered sugar, then mix in vanilla.
  4. Assemble the Cake: Layer cake with coconut-pecan frosting, then cover with chocolate frosting.

Notes

  • You can add extra coconut or pecans to the frosting for additional texture.
  • Make sure to cool the cakes completely before frosting to prevent melting.
