Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 loaf (about 10 cups) day-old crusty bread (sourdough or French baguette), torn into cubes
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 3 celery stalks, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh thyme, chopped (or 2 teaspoons dried)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh sage, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 1/2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Bread
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread the bread cubes on a baking sheet and toast for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 2: Sauté the Vegetables
In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions, celery, and garlic. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until soft and fragrant.

Step 3: Combine the Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine toasted bread cubes, sautéed vegetables, fresh herbs, and beaten eggs. Pour in the broth gradually, tossing until the bread is moistened but not soggy.

Step 4: Bake the Stuffing
Transfer mixture to a greased baking dish. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 10-15 minutes until the top is golden brown and crispy.

Step 5: Serve
Remove from oven and serve warm.

Notes

  • Add broth gradually to avoid soggy stuffing.
  • Toss in toasted pecans or dried cranberries for added texture and flavor.
  • Make ahead by preparing the stuffing a day in advance and baking before serving.
