Ingredients
Scale
Red (Heart) Batter
- 15.2 ounces box of red velvet cake mix
- 3 eggs
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- 3 tablespoons water
- 3 ounces packet of vanilla pudding mix
- 1 cup sour cream
Green Batter
- 15.2 ounces box of yellow cake mix
- 3 eggs
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- 3 tablespoons water
- 6 ounces (2 3-ounce packets) pistachio pudding mix
- 1 cup sour cream
Icing
- 1½ cups white icing
- ¼ cup green icing
- 2 tablespoons red heart sprinkles
Instructions
- Prepare the Red Batter: In a large bowl, combine the red velvet cake mix, eggs, vegetable oil, water, vanilla pudding mix, and sour cream. Mix thoroughly until the batter is smooth and well combined.
- Prepare the Green Batter: In another bowl, mix together the yellow cake mix, eggs, vegetable oil, water, pistachio pudding mix, and sour cream until fully blended and smooth.
- Create the Heart Shape: Pour the red velvet batter into the cake pan in the shape of a heart. This will form the central red heart of the cake. Next, carefully pour the green batter around the red heart shape to fill the rest of the pan. The contrast of colors will create a striking Grinch-inspired design.
- Bake the Cake: Preheat the oven to the temperature recommended on the cake mixes (usually 350°F / 175°C). Bake for approximately 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool the Cake: Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. This ensures the cake sets properly before icing.
- Apply the Icing: Once cooled, spread the white icing evenly over the surface of the cake. Add the green icing decoratively on top of the white icing, using a piping bag or spatula for a festive look.
- Add Sprinkles: Finish by sprinkling the red heart sprinkles across the top of the cake to enhance the holiday theme and add a touch of texture and color.
Notes
- Ensure both batters are smooth to achieve a clean separation of colors in the final cake.
- You can use store-bought white and green icings or make your own by coloring white frosting with food coloring.
- Allow the cake to cool completely before icing to prevent the frosting from melting.
- For a stronger pistachio flavor, you can fold in chopped pistachios into the green batter.
- This cake is best served at room temperature and can be stored covered at room temperature for up to 2 days.
