Grandma’s Irish Soda Bread is a traditional recipe passed down through generations. This bread is hearty, slightly sweet, and perfect for breakfast or as a snack.

Main Ingredients:
- 1 and 3/4 cups (420ml) buttermilk*
- 1 large egg (optional, see note)
- 4 and 1/4 cups (531g) all-purpose flour
- 3 Tablespoons (38g) granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 5 Tablespoons (71g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed*
Optional Ingredient:
- 1 cup (150g) raisins
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat oven to 425°F (218°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix buttermilk and egg. Slowly add to the dry ingredients, then mix in butter and raisins (if using).
- Knead and Shape: Transfer dough to a floured surface, knead lightly, and shape into a round loaf.
- Bake: Place the loaf on the prepared baking sheet. Cut an ‘X’ on top and bake for about 45-55 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the bread to cool before slicing and serving.
Notes
- If you prefer a denser bread, skip the egg.
- Feel free to customize by adding nuts or seeds to the dough.
