Description

Recreate the classic fast-food Filet-O-Fish at home with this easy and delicious recipe. A crispy, golden-fried fish fillet, creamy tartar sauce, and melty American cheese come together on a soft, steamed bun for the perfect bite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Fish Fillets: 2 cod, haddock, or pollock fillets (about 4-6 oz each)
  • Salt & Pepper: To taste
  • 1/2 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 Egg, Beaten
  • 3/4 cup Panko Breadcrumbs
  • Oil for Frying: Vegetable or canola oil
  • 2 Soft Buns: Potato or brioche for best texture
  • 2 Slices American Cheese
  • For the Tartar Sauce:
  • 1/3 cup Mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons Finely Chopped Pickles
  • 1 teaspoon Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dijon Mustard (optional, for extra tang)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Fish

    • Pat the fish fillets dry with a paper towel. Season lightly with salt and pepper.

  2. Bread the Fillets

    • Set up three bowls: flour in the first, beaten egg in the second, and panko breadcrumbs in the third.

    • Dredge each fillet in flour, dip in egg, and coat in panko, pressing gently to adhere.

  3. Fry the Fish

    • Heat about ½ inch of oil in a skillet to 350°F (175°C).

    • Fry the fillets for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.

    • Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

  4. Make the Tartar Sauce

    • In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, chopped pickles, lemon juice, and Dijon mustard. Stir well and set aside.

  5. Steam the Buns

    • Wrap buns in a damp paper towel and microwave for 15 seconds to soften.

  • Assemble the Sandwich

    • Spread tartar sauce on the bottom bun.

    • Place a crispy fish fillet on top, then a slice of American cheese.

    • Cover with the top bun and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Baking Alternative: Bake fish at 400°F (200°C) for 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway.
  • Gluten-Free Option: Use gluten-free flour and panko.
  • Make It Healthier: Use an air fryer at 375°F for 10 minutes, flipping halfway.
