Ingredients
Scale
Sausage Filling
- 1 lb (450g) sausage meat or ground sausage
- ½ cup finely diced onion
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tsp dried sage
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- ¼ tsp ground black pepper
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 tbsp olive oil
Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Prepare the Filling: Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, cooking until softened and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Mix Sausage Mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the sausage meat with the sautéed onion and garlic, dried sage, dried thyme, ground black pepper, and salt. Mix thoroughly to evenly distribute the herbs and spices.
- Prepare the Pastry: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lay the thawed puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Roll it out slightly if needed to even the edges.
- Form the Rolls: Spread the sausage mixture evenly along the center of the pastry sheet in a long log shape. Fold the pastry over the sausage filling, sealing the edges by pressing them together, then use a knife to trim any excess dough.
- Slice and Glaze: Cut the sausage roll log into individual portions, about 2 inches each. Place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Brush the top of each roll with the beaten egg to achieve a glossy, golden crust.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown and the sausage meat is cooked through.
- Serve: Remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving warm. Enjoy your festive sausage rolls with your favorite dipping sauce or mustard.
Notes
- Use good-quality sausage meat for the best flavor and texture.
- If puff pastry is frozen, allow it to thaw completely in the refrigerator overnight.
- Feel free to add herbs like rosemary or marjoram to customize the flavor.
- Sausage rolls can be made in advance and reheated in the oven for a few minutes before serving.
- Ensure the sausage is cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) for safety.
