Description

Croque Madame is a classic French sandwich featuring ham, cheese, and a creamy sauce, topped with a fried egg. This recipe adds a touch of dill for extra flavor.

  • 4 tablespoons salted butter, softened, divided
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 ounces shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste

  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Additional Ingredients:

  • 4 slices white bread, lightly toasted
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 thin slices Black Forest ham
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh dill, or to taste (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce: In a saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter, whisk in flour, then gradually pour in milk. Cook until thickened. Add Gruyère, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  2. Assemble the sandwiches: Spread mustard on bread slices, add ham, sauce, and another slice of bread.
  3. Cook the sandwiches: In a skillet, melt remaining butter and fry sandwiches until golden brown.
  4. Add the final touches: Fry eggs, place on top of sandwiches, garnish with dill, and serve.
