  • Perfectly soft, fluffy texture with a cheesy, herby crust.
  • Great for making delicious homemade Subway-style sandwiches.
  • Easy to make with simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Dough:

  • 3 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) instant yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

For the Herb & Cheese Topping:

  • 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 2 tablespoons butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast
  2. In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy. This step ensures the yeast is active and will help the bread rise properly.
  3. Make the Dough
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine bread flour, salt, garlic powder, and onion powder. Add in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Let the Dough Rise
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  7. Shape the Loaves
  8. Punch down the dough and divide it into 2 equal portions. Shape each portion into a 12-inch loaf and place them on a lined baking sheet. Cover with a towel and let them rest for 30 minutes.
  9. Add the Herb & Cheese Topping
  10. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush each loaf with melted butter, then sprinkle the shredded Monterey Jack, Parmesan, oregano, basil, garlic powder, and parsley evenly on top.
  11. Bake the Bread
  12. Bake for 18-22 minutes or until golden brown and the cheese is melted and slightly crispy. Let the bread cool slightly before slicing.

Notes

  • For extra softness, brush the hot loaves with more melted butter after baking.
  • If you prefer, substitute Monterey Jack with mozzarella or provolone for a different cheesy twist.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.
