Ingredients
Units
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 8 slices rye bread
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 slices cheddar cheese (optional)
- 4 tbsp mayonnaise (for spreading on bread)
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions:
- Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and caramelized, about 15–20 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.
- Shape the Patties:
- Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape into thin, oval-shaped patties slightly larger than the bread slices. Season both sides with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Cook the Patties:
- In the same skillet, cook the patties over medium-high heat for 3–4 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Add a splash of Worcestershire sauce to the skillet for extra flavor. Remove and set aside.
- Assemble the Sandwiches:
- Spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice of rye bread. Place one slice, mayonnaise-side down, in the skillet over medium heat. Layer with a slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked patty, caramelized onions, and a slice of cheddar cheese (if using). Top with another slice of rye bread, mayonnaise-side up.
- Toast the Sandwiches:
- Cook the assembled sandwich for 2–3 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Serve:
- Slice the patty melt in half and serve hot with fries, coleslaw, or a pickle on the side.
Notes
- Use sourdough or whole wheat bread if rye isn’t available.
- For a spicier kick, add a few jalapeño slices or a dash of hot sauce inside the sandwich.
- Leftovers can be reheated in a skillet to retain crispness.
