Description

These elegant and savory bundles feature tender asparagus spears and melted cheese wrapped in flaky puff pastry. Perfect as an appetizer or side dish, they are quick to prepare and sure to impress at any gathering.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 12 thin asparagus spears, trimmed
  • 1/2 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or mozzarella or cheddar)
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: a pinch of garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet to smooth any creases. Cut into 6 equal squares.
  3. Assemble Bundles: Spread about 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard onto each pastry square. Sprinkle approximately 1 tablespoon of shredded cheese over the mustard. Season with a little salt, pepper, and garlic powder if desired.
  4. Add Asparagus: Place 2 asparagus spears diagonally across each pastry square.
  5. Fold and Seal: Fold two opposite corners of the pastry over the asparagus, overlapping them slightly in the center. Press gently to seal.
  6. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the beaten egg over the tops and edges of each pastry bundle to ensure a golden finish.
  7. Bake: Transfer the bundles to the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
  8. Serve: Allow the bundles to cool for a few minutes before serving warm.

Notes

  • Cheese Variations: Feel free to experiment with different cheeses like brie, goat cheese, or parmesan for unique flavor profiles.
  • Additional Fillings: For an extra savory touch, consider adding a slice of prosciutto or ham beneath the asparagus.
  • Vegetable Alternatives: If asparagus isn’t available, green beans or roasted red peppers can be used as substitutes.
