  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp vinegar/lemon juice)

Instructions

  1.  Preheat and Melt Butter
  • Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Place butter in an 8×8-inch baking dish and place it in the oven until melted. Remove and set aside.

  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Pour in buttermilk and mix until just combined. The dough will be sticky.
  1. 3. Pour and Spread
  • Carefully pour the dough into the baking dish over the melted butter. Use a spatula to spread it evenly.
  1. 4. Score the Dough
  • Use a knife to lightly score the dough into 9 or 12 squares.

  • Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown on top and crispy around the edges. Let cool slightly before cutting along the scored lines.
