Scale
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 cup buttermilk (or 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp vinegar/lemon juice)
Instructions
- Preheat and Melt Butter
- Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Place butter in an 8×8-inch baking dish and place it in the oven until melted. Remove and set aside.
- 2. Make the Dough
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Pour in buttermilk and mix until just combined. The dough will be sticky.
- 3. Pour and Spread
- Carefully pour the dough into the baking dish over the melted butter. Use a spatula to spread it evenly.
- 4. Score the Dough
- Use a knife to lightly score the dough into 9 or 12 squares.
- 5. Bake Until Golden
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown on top and crispy around the edges. Let cool slightly before cutting along the scored lines.
Notes
- Use high-quality butter for the best flavor.
- Don’t overmix the dough—it should be just combined to stay light and fluffy.
- Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick; if it comes out clean, they’re ready!
