Description

These delicate and buttery Burano Butter Cookies (Buranelli di Burano) are a traditional Italian treat with a hint of lemon. They are crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and perfect with a cup of coffee or tea!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon zest
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

Preheat the Oven & Prepare the Baking Sheet

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Cream the Butter and Sugar

  • In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.

3. Add the Egg Yolks, Vanilla, and Lemon Zest

  • Mix in egg yolks, vanilla extract, and lemon zest until well combined.

4. Incorporate the Flour

  • Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. If too sticky, chill the dough for 30 minutes.

5. Shape the Cookies

  • Roll dough into walnut-sized balls, then gently flatten into discs.
  • Optionally, press an indentation in the center with a fork.

6. Bake the Cookies

  • Place cookies on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them 1 inch apart.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.

7. Cool & Enjoy

  • Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Use room temperature butter for the perfect creamy texture.
Chill the dough if it’s too sticky—this helps with shaping.
Watch the baking time to avoid overbaking; the edges should be golden but the centers soft.
