Description

Made famous by Kevin Malone in The Office, Brian Baumgartner’s chili is a rich, slow-simmered dish packed with deep flavors. This classic chili recipe features a savory blend of ground beef, beans, tomatoes, and aromatic spices, making it the perfect comfort meal.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 tablespoon grapeseed oil (or cooking oil)
  • 1 large yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 pounds lean ground turkey (or lean ground beef)
  • 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
  • 1 can (24 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (16 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 teaspoons chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons ancho chili powder
  • 4 teaspoons oregano
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 can (16 oz) Bush’s® Pinto Beans in a Mild Chili Sauce, undrained
  • 1 can (16 oz) Bush’s® Kidney Beans in a Mild Chili Sauce, undrained
  • Shredded cheddar cheese, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Sauté Aromatics: In a large pot, heat grapeseed oil over medium-high heat. Add chopped onion, green bell pepper, and garlic. Sauté until softened, being careful not to overcook.
  2. Brown the Meat: Add ground turkey or beef to the pot. Cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
  3. Incorporate Tomato Paste: Stir in tomato paste, ensuring it coats the meat and vegetables evenly.
  4. Add Remaining Ingredients: Add diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, water (if desired), black pepper, salt, chili powder, ancho chili powder, oregano, and sugar. Stir to combine.
  5. Simmer the Chili: Bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and let simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Add Beans: After 30 minutes, add the pinto and kidney beans along with their chili sauce. Stir to combine and continue to simmer for an additional 20 minutes.
  7. Serve: Ladle the chili into bowls and garnish with shredded cheddar cheese or your preferred toppings.

Notes

  • For a milder chili, reduce the amount of chili powder.
  • Feel free to customize with additional toppings like sour cream, diced onions, or jalapeños.
