Units
Scale
- 1 1/2 oz tequila (silver or blanco)
- 1 oz fresh lime juice
- 1/2 oz orange liqueur (like Cointreau or Triple Sec)
- 1/2 oz simple syrup (or adjust to taste)
- 1/2 oz red wine (such as a fruity red like Merlot or Shiraz, for “bloody” effect)
- Salt, for rimming the glass
- Lime wedge, for garnish
Instructions
- Rim a margarita glass with salt by running a lime wedge around the rim, then dipping it in salt. Set aside.
- In a cocktail shaker, combine tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, and simple syrup. Fill with ice and shake well until chilled, about 15-20 seconds.
- Strain the mixture into the prepared margarita glass.
- Carefully pour the red wine over the back of a spoon so it floats on top of the drink, creating a layered, “bloody” effect.
- Garnish with a lime wedge, if desired, and serve immediately.
Notes
- For a sweeter drink, add a bit more simple syrup to taste.
- Try different red wines to find your favorite; fruity wines work especially well with this recipe.
- For a smokier twist, use mezcal in place of tequila.
