Description

This Black Pepper Beef recipe is a delicious and savory dish that is perfect for a quick and easy weeknight meal. Tender slices of beef are stir-fried with a flavorful black pepper sauce, bell peppers, onions, and spring onions, creating a delicious and aromatic dish that pairs perfectly with steamed jasmine rice.


Ingredients

– 500 g (1 lb 2 oz) chuck (braising/casserole) steak or oyster blade (flat-iron/butler’s) steak, thinly sliced against the grain

– 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)

– 1 tbsp sesame oil

– 1 tbsp cornflour (cornstarch)

– 1/4 tsp freshly cracked black pepper

– 1 tbsp shaoxing wine

– 1 tbsp light soy sauce

– 1 tbsp dark soy sauce

– 1 tbsp oyster sauce

– 2 tbsp dark soy sauce

– 1 tsp white sugar

– 2 tbsp cooking oil

– 1 tbsp freshly minced garlic

– 1 red capsicum (bell pepper), seeded and cut into chunks

– 1 onion, cut into thick wedges

– 4 spring onions (scallions), cut into 2 cm ((3/4 inch) batons

– Steamed jasmine rice

– Extra freshly cracked black pepper (optional)


Instructions

1. In a bowl, mix the sliced beef with bicarbonate of soda, sesame oil, cornflour, and black pepper. Set aside for 15 minutes.

2. In a small bowl, combine shaoxing wine, light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, oyster sauce, dark soy sauce, and sugar. Set aside.

3. Heat cooking oil in a wok or large pan over high heat. Add garlic and stir-fry until fragrant.

4. Add the marinated beef and stir-fry until browned. Add the capsicum and onion, stir-fry for a few minutes.

5. Pour in the sauce mixture and stir well to combine. Cook until the sauce thickens.

6. Add spring onions and stir well. Serve the black pepper beef hot with steamed jasmine rice. Enjoy!


Notes

– For a spicier version, add chopped red chili or chili flakes.

– You can also add other vegetables like broccoli, carrots, or mushrooms for added texture and flavor.
