- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
- 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing, optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat and Prepare
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
Step 2: Make the Sausage Gravy
- In a large skillet, cook the breakfast sausage over medium heat until browned and crumbled.
- Sprinkle in the flour and stir until the sausage is coated.
- Gradually pour in the milk, stirring constantly, until the gravy thickens.
- Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder (if using). Remove from heat.
Step 3: Assemble the Casserole
- Cut the biscuits into quarters and spread half of them across the bottom of the baking dish.
- Pour the sausage gravy evenly over the biscuit layer.
- In a bowl, whisk together eggs and ¼ cup milk, then pour over the gravy.
- Sprinkle with shredded cheese (if using).
- Arrange the remaining biscuit pieces on top.
Step 4: Bake to Perfection
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.
- Optional: Brush the baked biscuits with melted butter for extra flavor.
- Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Don’t Overbake – Check at 30 minutes to keep the biscuits soft and fluffy.
- Make It Spicier – Use hot sausage or add a pinch of cayenne to the gravy.
- For a Fluffier Egg Layer – Let the eggs sit for 5 minutes before baking.
- Vegetable Add-Ins – Try adding diced bell peppers, onions, or spinach for extra flavor.
- Dairy-Free Option – Use oat milk or almond milk and dairy-free cheese.
- Gluten-Free Option – Swap in gluten-free biscuits and use cornstarch instead of flour for the gravy.
